Exploring Yading and Having Fun at a Restaurant

The one and only Free Day in China. The day we dont have to wake up early and dont have to ride a bike if you dont want to.

There was a choice to be made still thou. Yading famous scenic spot located at the southeren spot of Dao Cheng County where one could see snowcap mountains along beautiful valleys and crystal clear blue ponds.

A Local Tibetian Buddist Temple in Yading

The offical name is the Three Hue Snow Mountain which has a AAAAA grade tourist attraction. The catch, one would need to take the local bus up to the starting point, pay the entry fee and bus fee to almost RMB 370 and then hike along a short path or long path depending on one’s choice to see the scenic view.

When I heard Bus, I checked the road and route and gave it a hard pass as I saw the similar crazy winding roads that we got to Yading on motorbike. Bike I have control but bus .... the fear of motion sickness made the decision easy for me. The view however was something I would just have to come back another day eventually and push through the fear. Next time.

The other motivating factor was the heavy cloudy weather during the day. I was skeptical that one can see a snowcap mountain during this kinda of weather. The crew that went was only 4 out of 16 of us. Bing brought them into the scenic area as a guide while the rest of us just chilled at Yading town.

Exploring Yading Town

Exploring Yading Town

Yading became a split with me Seapirate and Bullet exploring together while the rest followed Captain in the begining but eventually all split up to go shopping for souviniours on their own. The hunt was on for stickers for the bikes without even anyone asking. First shop and the first nice shirt showing Route 318 was an immediate buy for Bullet and Seapirate.

Route Marker G318 which was how the sticker looked like.

Locals Motorbike with so much Blings .... Unfortunately we could not find any of the blings for sale.

I became the designated translater/bargain negotiator ever pressing down the price. The boys did a good job to linger on as well while I sweet talk the girls for lower price. Every now and then they make a grunted face while telling me in malay that its so cheap .. ok la ... but never suddenly cutting off the negotiation process dragging the time out to see how much lower the price can go.

In the end we got some great deals for when Captain gang met up an hour later we found out that they got chopped. Not much different but still a win is a win. Sticker was the biggest hunt in a way. Almost every shop has them now that we know how the sticker looks like. It could be seen pasted on windows, tables etc to draw attention of the customers. The stickers however were huge. They were meant to be stick to cars and pick up truck.

After 4 shops the guys gave up, and while I still kept going into shop to browse for no reason, out of the blue one of the shop had the petite size stickers, fully reflective 3M type and not those cheap printed stickers. I had to ask before the guy dipped his hand under the table to bring it out. I gave Bullet and Seapirate which was sitting outsite a glimpse and they jumped and ran into the shop.

The negotiation was hard this time for they could not keep their excitement contained. I decided to do a different way and go for quantity bulk discount instead. Thinking they would only have like 10 stickers at most, I asked for the guy to take out every single stock he had. My thinking was between Seapirate, me and Bullet .. we could easily eat up the whole stock. The guy fumble under the table and said no more .. only left this four ... AH .... suddenly he found the hidden stack ... and a thick stack of stickers was still in play.

Bullet thinking he could sell the stickers to the rest of the group bought 10 pcs.. I bought 2 and Khairul bought 2. Price bargained down was 7 Yuan ... and that price sticked throughout for the rest that manage to find the shop later in the day as well. Bullet plan fail as the other gang was very meticulate never giving up and asking at every single shop. Rather he said his plan was wrong .... he should have whacked the entire sticker collection to monopolized it,.

Moving on we saw a silver shop with the locals setting up fire and moulds for the production of craft. I could not help myself but walk in for a visit. Seapirate eventually kept asking about bracelet and so happen his wife called which I said Hi being his roomate. When Bullet and me was ready to go he was still hanging around trying to ask with english to the shop on price
.

Silvercrafting in Process

Sensing he was really interested I became a translater ... then bargain negotiator ... price was 12 yuan per gram. And I translated it wrong as 12 yuan for the whole comb. The comb ended up becoming 600 yuan and it was a no go. Eventually I bargain the price to be 10.5 yuan a gram. Seapirate slipped a nice bracelet into his pocket and we were onwards to the next shopping shop

Along the way we stopped many shop really, and I had the opportunity to speak to many of the shopkeeper which were locals trying to ply their goods while the husband or friends collects and makes them at some other place. Seapirate and Bullet bag a few more stuff along the way while my small haul was stamps from the post office.

We eventually split up a bit for I wanted to find different food in Yading. There was only one Halal muslim food restaurant in Yading hence for two dinners and lunch the whole gang would be there.

Splitting from the Group let me to this .... Black Chicken Noodle

After dinner I took a walk and passed by the restaurant. I could see inside and some of the crew was there for their dinner. Seeing the panic on the girls face ( the family had a pretty young daughter working as a waitress ) I decided to walk in to help out.

The Only Halal Restaurant in Yading

Earlier that day during lunch when I ate there with Seapirate and Bullet, Bullet asked for a photo with her using hand gesture. No translation required but the understanding send her running into the kitchen to hide and not coming out for a while. Her face light up with a smile so wide when she saw me outside knowing that I could speak mandarin and some of the crew already inside, immediately latch onto me for translation to order things they like or more like customizing their orders.

Only the second day and they were out of things to try in the menu. I had to slowly custom the menu base on request and ability of the restaurant to fix dinner. Before I could run, another group came in, and I was dragged by her to the next table, and another group (Captain) came in ... and I was dragged as well. Captain told me to go away that he could handle it ... less than a minute later the girl came running to me and drag me back to Captain table, which I told him, she could not understand you. I asked her then, if she would hire me to work here. All i got was a shy smile with no answer.

My modified dish, Chinese Style Speggeti with Lamb and Potatoes

The Crew In the Restaurant ...

Everyones food ordered and delivered, I bid my farewell to the girl but I was scolded by her. What happens when they need to pay the bill? Who is going to help explain and translate? They keep walking around switching places, taking stuff .. ordering takeaway but I have no idea who will pay for what item? You sit down and dont go.

I got stuck at that restaurant for 3 hours ... at least there was free tea.

When the last of the crew finally left the restaurant, looking back I could see the family finally slump into chairs with a sigh ... it was a tough crowd and I gave a smile for we Malaysian do love our food.

Crossing the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macau Bridge (HZMB)

I had long since decided to leave Hong Kong toward Zhuhai via the HZMB Bridge. It was the longest fixed sea bridge in the world at 55km and it was something I would love to experience riding my motorcycle across but alas with the restriction of a forigner, I guess I have to settle for doing it via shuttle bus.

Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macau Bridge (HZMB)

From Tsim Sha Shui downtown, I took the MTR to Tung Chung Station. The cost of single journey ticket on the MTR between this two station was HKD 20.5. From Tung Chung station get out and I walked around looking for the bus station following the signs espescialy looking out for bus number B6.

The bus B6 was simple enaugh. At the bus stop, board the bus and it was only one stop to HMZB Port. Fare was HKD 9.1 but I threw in HKD 10 as I had no exzact change nor octopus card. At the HMZB Port, I cleared Hong Kong Immigration for exit.

Exit HK Immigration and Onwards to Shuttle Bus Ticket Counter

After that there was a choice. Buy a shuttle bus ticket ( Gold Bus ) to Zhuhai or to Macau. As much as I was set to going to Zhuhai, I had a pause. Ah Macau .... the Vegas of Asia .... how I longed for a short micro detour. Bought the Zhuhai shuttle bus ticket for HKD 65 and quickly up the bus and zoom, we were on our way along the bridge which became a undersea tunnel and then up in the air as a bridge again.

The temptation to go Right Way ....

The bridge was truly a marvel. I have never been on any bridge like it. You know its a bridge and that its crossing something but with this bridge you can’t see the other side of the land. One could see only a bridge going out to sea in the horizon.

Its quite a view for the driver while for the bus passanger like me, a minor glimpse but feels like a dream where the bridge could take you to another world. It was a long ride as well nearly 45 minutes and then it was Zhuhai Port disembarkation.

HZMB Shuttle Bus (Gold Bus)

Here I re-entered China and Immigration looked at me funny.

Do you have Flight Ticket out of China ?
No.

How do you plan to exit China ?
Bus to Vietnam via Nanning.

Do you have accomodation all the way to Nanning booked ?
No.

Where do you plan to visit in China ?
Somewhere along here and Nanning.

I read that China now allow Visa Free Entry for Malaysian 15 days. “Emphasis on 15 days with a big smile"

The immigration officer smiled at me and emphasised that 15 days included today. Welcome to China again he smiled.

Riding to Daocheng County – Yading from Shangrila (Deqin)

Shangrila to Yading was one of the shortest distance we ever traveled within a day .. no highway today only small road, even smaller than national road and so small that even google map is missing the road. It was smaller than the road through Tiger Leaping Gorge and that was on google map albeit barely after massive zooming in.

Towards the Mountains & Daocheng County

Today would also be the only day that we reach the hotel the same time as the big bikes as they could not really speed through those small winding roads. We still did not see them since they were riding as fast as they could and we were stopping way too much as the scenery was too awesome to ignore.

Easy road first on flatlands, then how do we know we are on a small village roads? We see yaks walking the road and thats when the fun really starts. It was a moody day as well for a ride, cloudy and rain was constant in and out the whole day but not heavy just super cold that even a light rain cause us to gear up.

Yaks on the Road

Gear up for Wet Weather

Slowly we climb up elevation going to Yading, supposely today was the day we hit 4500m elevation, as we climb towards the clouds the view just kept changing and gets more and more spectacular. Photos does not do it justice. Most times we just took a photo then stare into the landscape for a long moment.

Winding Roads up the Mountain Valley

More Stops and more Beautiful Views

The roads were beautiful but also dangerous, if Tiger leaping george was nerfed by all the edge barriers constructed during covid, this area was still raw with plenty of landslides and falling rocks. We climbed and the scenary changed, the local tribes house and architecture also changed to something unlike stereotypical China. Squarish blocks and almost medival looking.

Squarish Blocks Buildings in Yading. This one is actually a Temple

The mountains looks like something out of a fantasy movie, and before we know it, we reached Yading.

A View Like a Fantasy Book

That night we all went to the only muslim restaurant in Yading which would become the next three meals for the day as well for the rest and I would eventually ask for a job at the restaurant.

Exploring ShangriLa (Diqing) in One Night

The whole crew was going out for hot pot dinner at a halal restaurant nearby and I just said byeee. Ditch my bag in the room and a quick charge of phone for battery and I was out running to grab a taxi. Taxi to the ancient city of Shangrila was 10 RMB for 4 km and I paid it to save time so I could actually see the Little Potala Palace.

To Little Potala Palace

Little Potala Palace Entrance

I was worried it was closed but alas it was still open and I walked in to make a prayer for mom. I ended up hanging around the temple ground so long just walking around, observing people and of course pulling the humoungous tibetan bell.

Large Tibetan Prayer bell at Diqing Shangrila

There was so many people everywhere at the temple althought It was already so late. I kept alternating observing the temple architecture, detailing sculptures and people. The local tourist here were similar to Dali, they all dressed up beautifully in minority tribes costumes and go all around the temple ground taking photos.

No dinner, no problem, I was willing to sacrifice dinner for exploring and by 10 pm I headed down from the temple to the old town to see the other part of Shangrila. The tourist part.

Everything was already starting to close up. In away they could tell that once the temple close at 10pm, the people slowly drift outwards and onwards. I could not help looking of course for the tourist part of town was still very picturesque and the trinkets were facinating in their own way.

Diqing Ancient Town

Diqing Ancient Town

Of all the suvinear shop selling tibetian trinkets only one caught my eye, the bell shop and there I spend nearly half an hour hearing different bells before settling on one that I like.

How much I asked, and of course that one would be the expensive one. I was looking for a deep tone ... and deep tone means larger bell hence a higher price. Quick negotiation and I bought the bell and it was already 11pm. Shop all around was closing down fast now.

By luck I managed to find dinner at 11pm. No hotpot for me but still ordering for one person without defaulting to fried noodle or fried rice was a challange. Ended up having too much food but still I was hungry and it worked. By the time I reached back the hotel via taxi, it was already 1am

ShangriLa was a blast but too short. I would have loved to really immerse into the city. Another sleep deprived day tomorrow .....

Finally Dinner ...

The Heart of the Ride – Lijiang to Shangrila (Diqing) via Tiger Leaping Gorge

We started the journey early again and I by now have been 3 days of sleep deprived getting about 5 hours a day. I know the signs and my body is screaming but I also know how much I can pump the body with red bull, energy bars and coffee before it gives out ... rest day is on day 5 and 6 and I’ll be dammed if I dont make full use of the time to explore.

I initially wanted to skip the Yulan Snow Mountain coz it would be time consuming to go up the cable car to the top and with Jazz previous day altitude sickness, there was a high chance another attact could happen as cable car just climbs up fast and no ability to stop the car midway. Mid morning discussion and the plan had change, to Yulan Snow Mountain base, snap a photo and run. I guess that was reasonable since its just a photo. Midway we encountered a tourist toll gate.

Toll Gate to Yulan Snow Mountain Scenic Spot

This was new Bing said and they were charging 100 yuan just to pass the road regardless if anyone go up to Yulan mountain or not. Weather was super cloudy obscuring everything and I told them it's a fat chance to get a photo of the snow cap mountain.

Once the big bike arrive, everyone agreed and we all made a turn but consolation prize was we did get to stop nearby to take some photos with horses and be on our way again to Tiger Leaping Gorge

Photos with Horses along the road ...

The trip really started this day I feel, ride to Tiger Leaping Gorge was through the old road ... not even national road but smaller than that. Base on videos and even Bing and Faz experience, it was no barriers at the edge where one can just roll off the cliff into the gorge. China made full use of 2020 to 2022 it seams and put up the entire barrier along this popular road trip trail, or at least almost all of it.

Tiger leaping Gorge was beautiful and we even found some new monument along the way to get great photo shots. At the Tiger monument was a van selling coffee and tea. A couple that was travelling China in their wan and selling coffee along the way for some pocket money. It was an amazing idea and one that I would have done if Malaysia had been as big as China.

The road behind Yulan Snow Mountain

The road towards Shangrila

Good stop, good coffee and of course everyone brought out their cooking kit for lunch. Some road trip locals from other parts of China all seam very interested in our bike group and came to take picture and I got cornered for translation and answers once they knew I could speak .... barely.

Travelling Van Selling Coffee

I was getting better at this for standard new tourist couristy always go around the same questions like where you are from, what you are doing, where you are going, how come I could speak mandarin etc. Keep repeating the same answers in different manner and my Mandarin was improving remarkably.

After the monument was the climp up to Shangrila. One word ... beautiful. Is all that could describe it. Me and Azu being the last two keep stopping for smoke breaks with Bing just taking a few photos then everything was kept and we just enjoy the scenary.

Riding into the Clouds & Mist

The distance today was short ... only about 300km but due to the many many and so many stops we had, just soak in the enviroment and take photos, we reach ShangriLa late around 830pm. Partially also due to going up mountains we were passing rain clouds and mist and the terrain was an amazing riding journey

When we reached ShangriLa, I immediatly ditch the crew. Checked in the hotel, said Hi to my roomate, chucked my bags and was out the door .... ^^

The Ride From Dali to Lijiang via old National Road and a Little Scare at the end of the Day

With the mopeds done with prayers and me having a quick run around Dali Ancient City, We regroup around 5pm and it was a group decision time after taking photos of Dali South Gate.

Ride the national road or the highway to Li Jiang. So far up to this point in China, we had always used the highway and never the national road. The rumour is that the national road is slower but the view is amazing and you get to see the people’s life more up close. The highway is beautiful but boring.

The Start of National Road from Dali to Lijiang.
Just look at that windmills which we rode up to and zig zag around them over the mountain

I personally wanted to do national road ... it's something new and mysterious which I do not want to be stuck riding highways everyday in China no matter how great the road is. I persuaded them to run half half.

First half national road and second half highway. Best of both worlds, national road while there is still light then hit the highway once the sunset. I enjoyed every moment of it and just like that it ended.. 60km of national road and we were at the next highway tollgate back on the highway to Li Jiang.

We reach Li Jing earlier than Kunming, around 9pm ... looks like the moped group is getting faster. All of us checked in to this amazing historical building inside Lijiang Ancient City converted into a hotel. I notice Azu was outside just waiting. I had a smoke with him and chatted about mom's condition and then I asked why has he not go into his room yet.

Liwang Hotel in Lijiang

Azu told me he was waiting for Jazz who was in the room but there was no answer on door knock or phone or anything. I fearing the worst ask the reception to open the door with a spare key. Jazz was lying in bed, apparently collapse the moment he arrive Li Jiang and was hit by altitude sickness. The rest of the gang came and quickly we gave him some altitude medicine for sleep.

Apparently he had the altitude sickness symtoms during the national road ride but did not say anything ... a dangerous ride this is turning out to be but somehow we made it. The next morning Jazz was all good, feeling ok and full of spirit.

I told him ... keep talking today ... thats how we know you are ok ....
